Detention conditions: are rights respected? The new FRA report

On 11 December 2019, the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) released its report on detention conditions in European prisons, titled “Criminal detention conditions in the European Union: rules and reality”. Overcrowding, poor sanitary  conditions and  limited  time outside cells in prisons violate detainees’ rights and jeopardise  rehabilitation. The report provides a useful overview of selected minimum standards of detention conditions in force at international and European levels, and how they translate into national laws. The goal of the report is to provide a database to legal practitioners involved in controversies before national Courts, the Court of Justice of the EU and in cross-border cases.
